This hand-knotted Tibetan Dragon rug, dating to circa 1900, presents two opposing dragons depicted in dynamic, sinuous motion, soaring amid stylized clouds in pursuit of a flaming jewel or pearl—a traditional symbol of enlightenment and spiritual attainment. The dragons are rendered with fierce, expressive features: bulging eyes, prominent whiskers, horns, and snarling mouths, all contributing to their potent mythological presence. Their bodies are intricately detailed with finely articulated scales.
In Tibetan cosmology, the dragon is a powerful emblem of protection, wisdom, and transformation, closely associated with elemental forces, particularly thunder and water. It is revered as a bringer of rain and a harbinger of fertility and renewal.
The rug’s outer border features a bold, polychromatic motif of stylized waves surmounted by clouds, reinforcing its elemental symbolism. At each corner, blooming chrysanthemums—longstanding symbols of longevity, joy, and spiritual resilience—offer a harmonious counterpoint to the dragons’ dynamic energy.
