Khaden
This hand-knotted Tibetan rug from the early 20th century (c. 1900) showcases two powerful dragons in dynamic, sinuous motion, soaring through stylized clouds in pursuit of flaming jewels—symbols of enlightenment, spiritual wisdom, and truth. Each dragon clasps a flaming pearl in its raised foreleg, with closed claws symbolizing mastery and the protection of sacred power.
The dragons are rendered in vivid detail: large expressive heads, manes, thick curling tails, bulging eyes, arched horns, flowing whiskers, and open, snarling mouths—evoking their mythic presence. Their finely articulated scales reflect the exceptional craftsmanship of the weaver. The clouds encircling them echo the aesthetic of Qing dynasty silk textiles, enhancing the rug’s imperial elegance.
Mount Meru (Mount Maru) motifs—representing the sacred centre of the universe in Tibetan-Buddhist cosmology—appear prominently at the centre of each side of the field. Framing the composition is a bold ‘T-shaped meander’ (thunder and lightning motif), a protective symbol linked to dynamic energy and divine intervention. The outer multi-coloured border features stylized depictions of ocean waves, mountain peaks, and sky—symbolizing the entirety of the universe and the harmony of the natural elements.
In Tibetan culture, dragons are revered as guardians of hidden knowledge, masters of the elements, and harbingers of transformation. Associated with water, thunder, and fertility, they embody protection and cosmic balance.
