Horse Blanket

This early 20th-century Thekeb, a traditional Tibetan horse blanket, is finely woven from hand spun wool and features a striking minimalist design built on the symbolic repetition of cross motifs.
The upper red band presents alternating cross forms. 
The red triangles, positioned at the edges of the upper field, likely serve as protective markers or directional symbols, anchoring the composition and reinforcing its apotropaic (evil-averting) function.
The main field extends this rhythm, forming a dense checkerboard of stylized crosses in alternating red and dark blue, set against a soft beige ground. The result is a rich yet balanced cadence, blending symbolic intent with visual clarity. 
In Tibetan culture, the cross is a powerful symbol of protection, believed to ward off evil spirits and negative energies. It also signifies balance and harmony, reflecting the four cardinal directions and the connection between the material and spiritual realms. As a visual echo of the cosmic mandala, it further represents stability, continuity, and the sacred relationship between humans, animals, and nature.
Compact, bold, and layered with meaning, this rare textile exemplifies the ritual and aesthetic sensibilities of Tibetan nomadic tradition.
