Horse Blanket
This hand-knotted Tibetan horse blanket, crafted from hand-spun wool around 1900, exemplifies the rich textile traditions of Tibet. The upper section features a deep cream-orange band adorned with two rows of multi-coloured crosses, known as tigma. These motifs, reminiscent of tie-dye patterns, are believed to possess talismanic properties, symbolizing protection and spiritual harmony for the Tibetan people.
Separating the top band from the main field is a pearl border, referred to in Tibetan as dung threng. While some sources suggest this design may have originated in Turkey, its significance in Chinese symbolism—where it represents a garland of shells and is associated with purity and protection—indicates a likely Chinese origin.
Below the pearl border, two opposing short arrow-shaped designs are depicted, with stitched leather straps atop them. These elements likely served to secure the blanket to the horse, reflecting the functional aspects of the blanket in equestrian contexts. Symbolically, they may represent the harnessing of energy or direction.
The deep blue field is embellished with a rhythmic sequence of multi-coloured crosses, distinct in motif from those on the top band. These crosses continue the tigma motif, reinforcing the blanket's protective symbolism and showcasing the weaver's artistry in creating a harmonious and balanced design.
This horse blanket not only served a practical purpose but also embodied cultural and spiritual significance, reflecting the intricate symbolism prevalent in Tibetan textile art.
