Khaden

Another weaving exhibiting the classic roundel patterns derived from Chinese silk brocades. It is not common to see borders used on rugs of this design type. An archaic motif is employed in this instance: a 'wave' pattern from which the Greek key or meandering 'T' border is ultimately derived. The traditional use of a cloth to bind the ends and edges is still intact. Tibetan selvedges are unstable, and the manner in which the edges and ends are finished encourages unraveling. The use of color seen here is extraordinary. Published analogy, Kuloy, Plate 97
