Sino-Tibetan Early 20th Century Khaden Rug with Chequerboard Field This finely hand-knotted khaden—a traditional Tibetan sleeping rug—dates to the early 20th century and showcases a striking bicolour chequerboard pattern. Within its symmetrical grid, ten stylised floral medallions, with eight multi-hued petals, create a mirrored composition symbolising purity and spiritual harmony. Framed by two slim borders, the rug’s outer band bursts with dynamic cloud, wave and mountain motifs, reflecting the movement of cosmic energy and life force. Along the border a repetitive cross motif reinforces the rug’s talismanic purpose—used in Tibetan homes to guard against negativity and draw in auspicious energies. Rich in symbolism and artistry, this piece remains in excellent condition for its age—a true textile jewel.
