An interesting checkerboard rug, unusual for the fact that it has such a developed, bold, and graphic border. Apparently intended for monastic use due to the predominantly orange field color, the border—composed of large-scale 'S' motifs—is probably a vestigial memory of an ancient aesthetic. Such 'S' borders are known in Central Asian weavings of antiquity, including Turkmen weavings (where they are usually used as a minor border) and Anatolian village rugs.
